Bella Roche

1885 to 1891

Bella Roche was built in 1885 by the local homesteaders. It is the first school mentioned in histories of the Troy area. Tradition claims the name means “beautiful rock” in French

As documented by Ann Driscoll in her book, They Came to a Ridge, the school house was built of logs and located 3/4 of a mile south of where Bethel Church would be built. The exact location is not known today.

The Bethel community used the school for Sunday School classes as noted in The Latah County Press, 5 June 1941 article.

It was described as a log building with benches along the walls serving as desks.

The only teacher known (documented) was Sam Chaney in 1889.

In 1891, due to overcrowding, Bella Roche was split into three schools: Olson, Golden Shields and Trout.
